The Honourable
Goe
Sir,

is the Fraya Reclamation forks are now practically at a close, I have the honour to invite your atten- tion to 0.0.0.185/1898, in which the following passage occurs:- "If however on the completion of the Praye Recienation, which "I understand is not far distant, it is clearly shown that Mr. "Chatham's new duties have occupied more time than the Govern- "ment can reasonably cisim from him, 1 shall be prepared to "consider the question of granting him some bonus..

It is, I think, within your knowledge that
my duties have cocupied more time than the Government could reasonably clair from me and I now therefore respectfully re- quest that the question of granting me a bonus may be referred
to the Secretary of State.

It appears certain that the cost of the entire Reclamation Scheme will not exceed, or will exceed to a very slight extent, the amount of the original estimate. In view of the large increase in prices which has occurred during the past 5 or 6 years, this result must be regarded as very satisfactory. It has only been accomplished by practising every possible economy which could be introduced in the construction of the work without in any way detracting from its stability.

In connection with this matter, I would
point out that it was on my advice and in opposition to the strong advice of Mr. Bowdler, who was then in charge of the work, that the extreme Western section of the schere was car-
-ried
The Colonial Secretary.
